Comrades - South Africa’s Ultimate Human Race, May 29th 2011

Getting to the start line, I believe was the ultimate challenge.
The challenge of qualifying, the hours of training and believing I was capable of running 86.6 km.
First I had to qualify. To do this I actually completed my first ironman in Busselton because I never thought running a marathon in under 5hrs was ever going to be possible for me. To my great surprise won the great ocean road age group by doing a marathon in 4.34mins. This was a huge confidence booster.
During the training runs I can tell you I never thought I’d even get to the start line.
It seemed I was always too slow and some days did not complete the distance then a few weeks out had a groin injury.
The day has arrived
Its 4.30am and 18,000 runners are standing in front of Durban’s town hall. At the start the music was so uplifting with the Africans dancing cheering and whistling. Then they sang the national anthem and it was just the most moving experience. An eerie silence, the countdown and the “cock crowed” there was a roar from the crowd and spectators and the race of my life started. My goal was to finish and not be taken off the run a medal would be a bonus.
The hills were relentless just some were shorter but there was always another one hiding around the next corner. Then just when you think the hills were getting less the sign, valley of 1000 hills smacks you in the face.
Yet, this would be the best day I have ever had. The music, spectators and other runners who cheered you on as you ran. The little children from the orphanage giving you a heartfelt hug as you passed. The big smiling eyes of the older children who once I gave my Pepsi drink to.
The woman who did the run with a back so hunched over she had to keep lifting her head up to see where she was going.
When I jumped on the finish line mat I knew I had run the most amazing race of my life.
After the run
The next day the truth of missing out by 5minutes hit hard and the tears fell.
I cried not just because I missed the medal but because it had been such an emotional day.
Today 2 months on and every time of think of the run I get emotional. I have never cried so much during or after a run before but it was worth it.

Here's a short report from ex-coomie girl Renee Lane of her experience at the 2011 NZ Ironman (her first attempt at this distance):
"Going in to the race, I really had no idea what to expect – 3.8km swim, 180km ride & lastly a 42.2km run… I lined up with the other professional athletes, a little awe struck, but excited at the opportunity before me – Mirinda Carfrae, Joanna Lawne, Sam Warriner to name just a few. It was a World class field. The gun went off, the nerves disappeared & I settled in to a nice rhythm in the swim. I came out of the water in just over 53mins and was in 7th position! I was 2mins ahead of my target swim time. I had the 2nd quickest transition, only behind Carfrae, which included a 400m uphill run to the bike compound – nice! On to the bike 180km’s, I was blown away by how quickly time passed and how busy it was… Climb, descend, work hard to catch another athlete, work together, eat, drink, get rained on etc. I was aiming for a sub 5hr 25min bike time and came in, in 5hr 24. Given the solid course and conditions, I was really happy with my swim / bike combination. My rookie mistake… I only drank 2 bottles for the entire ride & only ate half of my nutrition. I was a little dizzy off the bike and knew I needed to get some calories in asap, but it was too late. I fuelled as I went on the marathon & continued running as best I could, but the muscle fatigue set in early – with 26km’s to go! But I continued to run, at all times trying to keep the Garmin watch under 5min k pace. Apart from nutrition, my biggest lesson of the day, was that you just have to keep going – no matter how much it hurt, your slowest run is always going to be quicker than your fastest walk. I ended up with a 3.36 marathon, 10mins out of my anticipated time. I’d limited the damage of not enough nutrition by mentally accepting hurt like I never have before. Total Ironman time of 10hrs 1min and coming in at 8th place Professional Female. I was rapt with this result given it was my first attempt at the distance. Although it hurt like nothing, I have experienced before, the pain quickly fades and I will do it all again in the near future!"
